This exhibition showcases the most stimulating and challenging responses to Theatrum Mundi’s 2015 ideas competition Designing the Urban Commons. A fantastic jury assembled and 2300 votes were cast resulting in 10 winners, shown here alongside the highlights of our 2014 New York competition Designing for Free Speech.

Theatrum Mundi is a partner to the London Festival of Architecture and the exhibition forms part of the programme for LFA 2015.

Theatrum Mundi is hosting a keynote lecture by Massimo de Angelis and panel discussion featuring architects from live commons projects as part of Make City, a new festival of architecture and urban alternatives in Berlin. This marks the launch of the Designing the Urban Commons exhibition in Berlin.

Ash Amin: Lively Infrastructures

Sheikh Zayed Lecture Theatre, LSE New Academic Building, 54 Lincoln’s Inn Fields

In this public lecture on the intersections of urban design and urban identity, Professor Ash Amin presented research from the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, where inhabitants of favelas deprived of formal infrastructure communally co-construct supplies of water, electricity and sanitation. As people work together and the fruits of their collective labour become visible, he argues that these infrastructures become deeply implicated in the making of community and social identity.

Designing the Urban Commons:
lessons from the field

6.30pm-8pm, Wednesday 25 March 2015
Hong Kong Lecture Theatre, LSE Clement House, 99 Aldwych

The competition launched with an evening of provocations and discussion. Three groups engaged in live projects in London and Paris presented their work, describing how commoning emerges through the spaces they have created or occupied and also examine the issues and opportunities presented by commons as an approach to urban design.
